Beatrice Newman: Crafting the Future of Fashion

As the Head of Education & Research at Beyond Form, Beatrice Newman spearheads our comprehensive training and fashion educational programmes, ensuring our portfolio companies, as well as external students, have access to the specialised training, mentorship, and educational resources they need to thrive. Since Beyond Form is at the juncture of the academic and commercial worlds, Beatrice also shapes what the future of fashion looks like by working with outside organisations such as universities to develop educational fashion tech activities.

However, this is no easy task. Beatrice’s fashion knowledge is a culmination of over 15 years worth of experience in the fashion industry - as a designer, a small business owner, and an academic. For example, her pivotal role as the Head of Fashion Department at the University of East London has ensured that generations of emerging fashion talent are equipped with the necessary skills. Taking learnings from UEL (who has previously partnered with Beyond Form), Beatrice leads the charge in curriculum innovation and strategic investments aimed at cultivating digital skills and technology-driven processes among the next generation of fashion and design students. Thus, preparing ambitious individuals for the realities of the modern fashion tech ecosystem.

Not only is Beatrice an powerhouse fashion academic, but a visionary craftman and designer with her brand Korlekie. Who wouldn’t want to tap into a bit of her world?

Beatrice’s Top 3 Tips on How to Enter the Fashion Industry

1.Strengthen Your Network and Business Skills

Creatives often excel in their craft but may struggle with business negotiations. Traditionally, we have relied on patrons and allies to share our work within their communities. However, in an era dominated by influencers, building brand awareness can be challenging without a substantial support network. To overcome this, I advise creatives to cultivate their own circle of patrons and allies who will promote and speak about their creativity. Additionally, developing solid business acumen is crucial for confidently negotiating with influencers and patrons.

2.Balance Creativity with Market Understanding

One of the key lessons from my entrepreneurial journey is that financial success does not always align with being the most creative. It’s essential to balance understanding your market with showcasing the uniqueness of your designs. Instead of launching a fashion brand with a vast array of designs for the catwalk, consider starting with a minimal product offering. This approach can effectively highlight your craft, solidify your design perspective and brand identity, and make your work easily recognisable to your audience and the broader market.

3.Build a Support System and Financial Stability

Starting a fashion brand is a challenging endeavor, and it's crucial to surround yourself with a strong support system, take time to rest, and seek advice from industry peers. Running a business can feel isolating, but you don't have to do it alone. Additionally, I recommend having a side hustle to build financial equity while growing your business, which also allows you to save for personal needs. My academic career has been an invaluable asset, providing financial stability and contributing to the overall growth of my brand and personal development.
